Years before the Mayflower pilgrims settled the Plymouth Colony, Santa Fe, New Mexico, was already established in a small cluster of European-type dwellings. It would soon become the seat of power for the Spanish Empire north of the Rio Grande. This makes Santa Fe the oldest capital city in North America and the oldest European community west of the Mississippi.

Santa Fe grew substantially as a settlement due to the conquistador Don Pedro de Peralta in 1609-1610. Peralta and his men laid out the plan for Santa Fe at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.  Today, it is the site of both the oldest public building in America, the Palace of the Governors, and the nation's oldest community celebration, the Santa Fe Fiesta, established in 1712 to commemorate the Spanish conquest of New Mexico.

The site was originally occupied by Pueblo Indians between 1050 to 1150 but most archaeologists agree that their villages were abandoned 200 years before the Spanish arrived. The city has been the capital for the Spanish "Kingdom of New Mexico," the Mexican province of Nuevo Mejico, the American territory of New Mexico (which contained what is today Arizona and New Mexico) and since 1912, the state of New Mexico. In 1846, Santa Fe became the first foreign capital over-taken by the United States when General Stephen Watts Kearny captured it during the Mexican-American War.

Today, Santa Fe is recognized as one of the most intriguing urban environments in the nation, due largely to the city's preservation of historic buildings and a modern zoning code that mandates the city's distinctive Spanish-Pueblo style of architecture -- adobe (mud and straw) and wood construction. Also preserved are the traditions of the city's rich cultural heritage which helps make Santa Fe one of the country's most diverse and fascinating places to visit.
Home to the third largest art market in the country, Santa Fe is rich with culture, history and traditions of the region. Located in the high desert of Northern New Mexico, Santa Fe boasts the highest elevation for a capital city in the U.S.  With four distinct weather seasons and 300 days of sunshine, Santa Fe is continually recognized as a top destination for romance, dining and world-class festivals and events.

Located 15 miles north of downtown Santa Fe on the sovereign Native American land of the Pueblo of Pojoaque, the Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder Resort offers one of Santa Fe’s most unique golf, spa and gaming resort experiences. This is where the NSREC will be home-based for the week, with additional accommodations next door at the Homewood Suites by Hilton.  In addition to the town of Santa Fe itself, top cultural experiences nearby include the Poeh Cultural Center, the historic Roman Catholic Church at Chimayo and the bronze foundry in Tesuque.

Child Care Reimbursement
Child Care Page
The 2020 Conference is offering child-care reimbursement of up to $400 per family to assist conference attendees who incur additional childcare expenses by attending the conference. This program, funded by the NPSS AdCom, will also be carried out at other NPSS Conferences during 2020. Limited funds are available, and preference will be given to applicants in the early stages of their careers who are IEEE NPSS members. Up to five candidates will be selected.
Eligible applicants:
  • Families where both parents are registered attendees at the conference
  • Parent (registered attendee) who brings child(ren) to the conference
  • Parent (registered attendee) who incurs additional expenses at his or her home location, above normal child-care expenses, while attending the conference.
Allowable expenses include:
  • Babysitting or child-care expenses at the conference location while the parent(s) attend the conference
  • Additional baby sitting or child-care expenses incurred in leaving a child home while parent(s) attend the conference
  • Transportation expenses for a child-care provider to care for child(ren) during the conference. Reimbursement is only allowed for an adult or relative that does not share your home residence.
Expenses must be documented on a standard IEEE Expense Report. Documented expenses, accompanied by receipts, must be received by the Conference Finance Chair and Executive Vice-Chair of the Radiation Effects Committee within two weeks of the end of the conference (December 18, 2020). If the report is not received by that date, no reimbursement will be made. All reimbursements will be made after the conference.

To apply, an attendee must register for the conference technical sessions, and then complete the application form to request reimbursement for child care. The application must be received no later than October 12, 2020. Applicants will be notified whether they qualify for these funds within two weeks after the deadline. Due to limited funding, it is possible that not all qualified applicants will be eligible for reimbursement. The application form is available below.
